✔ About the coin seriesThe coin series to which this silver coin belongs is called Prehistoric Life and is issued by the German manufacturer Bavarian Main Mint. There are now 10 editions of this series and this silver coin is the tenth. Animal species that have already become extinct and no longer exist today have always been chosen as the coin motif.
✔ Probably the largest snake of all time
The colored motif side of this silver coin shows the Titanoboa. The Titanoboa was a species of boa that has been extinct for a long time. With a length of around 14 meters, it is probably the largest snake of all time. In the “Paleocene” era, i.e. between 60 million and 58 million years before Christ, the continent of South America was its home. The Amazon in particular, where the Titanoboa was a first-class swimmer. It also made itself comfortable on the banks of the Amazon. Due to its intimidating size, it is said to have fed on crocodiles and turtles, among other things. That is why a crocodile can be seen in the background of the coin motif. Its size is also the reason why it was given the name “Titanoboa”, because the translation of the name is “giant boa”. However, the boa species was not poisonous. The Titanoboa was a constrictor snake. The giant snake species anaconda is descended from the Titanoboa.
✔ Provides information about the climate
The Titanoboa can be used as a thermometer, so to speak. This is because snakes are cold-blooded animals. Researchers know that the Titanoboa could reach a length of 14 meters. However, this could only have been possible if the temperature in the Amazon at that time was between 32 and 25 degrees. Based on the length of the Titanoboa, researchers now know much more about the climate in South America in the “Paleocene”. Over time, however, the climate in South America has become cooler. Today the temperature there is between 25 and 28 degrees.
